All those leaves!

If you are wondering why city trucks haven’t picked up all those leaves you raked, the city has a message for you: Please be patient.

Tom Dole, Freeport Street Superintendent, said the combination of recent heavy rains, a late falling season, and a shortened work week due to Veteran’s Day 2008, has caused a little delay, but not as big as people think.

“Actually, over the last three weeks, we picked up an average amount of leaves,” said Dole. “We’re about right on target. But this year, everyone got out all their leaves at once, because we had a late falling, and also it rained a couple of weekends in a row — so when we finally had a good weekend, everyone got out and raked.”

Dole said that the rain has also been a factor in the efficiency of the leaf removal process.

“Wet leaves don’t go through the tube like dry, fluffy ones do,” Dole said. “So it takes longer to get them into the truck. But all in all, we’re really right about where we usually are at this time of year.”

Dole reminded everyone that although next week (Nov. 16 to 22, 2008) is a regular work week, Thanksgiving 2008 will shorten the following week.

“We’ll be picking up leaves for another three or four weeks, so people should just be patient — we’re coming,” Dole said. “We have only 12 men doing the whole city.”

He added that the only factor that will halt the leaf removal process before then is a measurable amount of snow.

“By that, I don’t mean just any snowfall. I mean enough snow that we have to plow,” Dole said. “If that happens, we’ll need the trucks that are currently being used to pick up the leaves.”
