New Printable Recipes for YOU, My Darling

I’m just finishing up the latest Thanksgiving recipe and will post it a little later today, just as soon as I do four hours of Stairmaster and repent. Then, tomorrow morning, I’ll be posting my unofficial Thanksgiving Cooking Schedule, wherein I’ll list the shortcuts and make-ahead steps I implement in order to avoid becoming a hairless, maniacal crazy woman the week of Thanksgiving. It might be a helpful guide for those of you who will be tackling the Thanksgiving meal for the first time.

Meanwhile, I’ve just finished loading printable recipes for the new dishes I’ve posted over the past couple of weeks. I believe this brings the printable file up to date for all Thanksgiving recipes on PW Cooks. (Let me know if you come across one that’s missing the corresponding printable.)

This is a monthly event where you, the Bleacher Creatures can vote for different categories every month. I think this is a great way for new writers to get known and get some exposure, and a way for veteran writers to get the satisfaction of knowing that many other writers respect and admire their work.

The way to vote is to comment on the article. If you would prefer for your vote to be anonymous, you can e-mail them to me at ALN424@aol.com. I, too, will post my votes as a comment to the article.

Hulla: Movie Review

director: jaideep varmaget rid of maroon: sushant singh, rajat kapoor, kartikadevi ranerating: **in times when most comedy capers comprise of cacophonous characters, hulla almost redefines the screechy slapstick genre. yet the humour is serious and the protagonists aren’t blatantly boisterous, the plotline is protracted and blown up over a pair of whistling dudes.raj (sushant singh) shifts to a trendy housing society that refuses to cooperate with him in almost every issue. but his major concern is the sleepless nights that he spends thanks to the whistling of the society’s security guard through the hours of darkness. despite his repeated attempts to win over the society to stop the nocturnal practice, the unperturbed neighbours literally turn a deaf-ear to his continual complaints. his annoyance is aggravated when neither his helpmate (kartikadevi rane) nor his friend (vrajesh hirjee) sympathizes with his setback and the society secretary (rajat kapoor) keeps on finding new ways to add to his disturbance.hulla, amusingly, employs a totally trifling of inquiry as its foundation and builds its entire narrative upon it. vice-president jaideep varma works on the general idea of how trivial irritation can intensify to mad frustrations and make a actually paranoid. but while his inkling is novel, his come near is rather repetitive. varma’s screenplay opens on a leaden note, establishes the characters and their conflicts but consequently goes clueless and strays senselessly in the second half.the principal half initiates with some forthrightly humorous characters and innovative gags which thankfully is in a veiled and sincere spirit. unfortunately most of this wit is almost reproduced in the second half bringing in a reason of monotony. raj’s constant confrontations with the watchman, clashes with the companionship residents and arguments with his wife and friend are stretched elsewhere without replenished wit or wisdom. after a point of time it becomes ambiguous on whether the director wants you to empathize with the lead protagonist’s (raj) problem or to identify with people bordering him (his bride, friend and neighbours) who consider he’s going paranoid from a petty pay-off.also some subplots, that the film sets idle in the first half, have no relevance to the allegation whatsoever and your hope after its bearing to the central plot goes futile. for instance rajat kapoor’s deprived of financial status and his quest to strike a big traffic deal has no significance to the saga and so does the unethical loan that sushant singh opts for from the variety market. an obvious dream sequence where the chief minister of the federal comes to raj’s rescue isn’t even remotely amusing and was wholly avoidable.the climax of the take leaves you peeved as it neither establishes any correlation with the whistling episode (that’s amplified throughout the film) even on a metaphorical level, nor does it resolve the character conflicts for that fulfilling happy-end moment. hulla attempts to be different but disconnects with the viewer while opting for a disjoint end.sushant singh symbolizes the worn out common man interpreted so immaculately by amol palekar in his benediction days. in his first out-and-out comedy attempt, sushant doesn’t exert expressions but it’s the vulnerable situations which he lands into that make you share a sincere smile. rajat kapoor is reliable as usual. kartikadevi rane is a refreshing change from the regular heroines and has a charming partition presence. howsoever it’s not the performances but the culmination of the film that disappoints largely.hulla would have been a sound cinema, if it would have habituated to more wit over whistle. alas things are blown out of proportion here.

All those leaves!

If you are wondering why city trucks haven’t picked up all those leaves you raked, the city has a message for you: Please be patient.

Tom Dole, Freeport Street Superintendent, said the combination of recent heavy rains, a late falling season, and a shortened work week due to Veteran’s Day 2008, has caused a little delay, but not as big as people think.

“Actually, over the last three weeks, we picked up an average amount of leaves,” said Dole. “We’re about right on target. But this year, everyone got out all their leaves at once, because we had a late falling, and also it rained a couple of weekends in a row — so when we finally had a good weekend, everyone got out and raked.”

Dole said that the rain has also been a factor in the efficiency of the leaf removal process.

“Wet leaves don’t go through the tube like dry, fluffy ones do,” Dole said. “So it takes longer to get them into the truck. But all in all, we’re really right about where we usually are at this time of year.”

Dole reminded everyone that although next week (Nov. 16 to 22, 2008) is a regular work week, Thanksgiving 2008 will shorten the following week.

“We’ll be picking up leaves for another three or four weeks, so people should just be patient — we’re coming,” Dole said. “We have only 12 men doing the whole city.”

He added that the only factor that will halt the leaf removal process before then is a measurable amount of snow.

“By that, I don’t mean just any snowfall. I mean enough snow that we have to plow,” Dole said. “If that happens, we’ll need the trucks that are currently being used to pick up the leaves.”
